Art you can use every day
Meet the artist
Jane Saffell | I make curvaceous hand-thrown pottery in stoneware glazed with tactile veils and dots over burnished surfaces, or with dynamic splashes, spirals and arcs.
As a youngster in Kenya I had to choose between a career in science or art.
I earned a biochemistry degree and PhD then spent 24 fulfilling years as an academic in London.
From leading research into central nervous system regeneration and education innovation at Imperial College, I moved to university leadership at City St George’s.
Through the years I scratched the creative itch when I could, and dreamed of one day living the artist life I had put aside for science
In 2018, I began evening pottery classes at Aylesford Pottery & School of Ceramics, spending all my time on the wheel, falling in love with clay.
Seven years later I left employment for pottery full time, working from a garden studio in Kent.
I exhibit my work around the UK as Catchpole Saffell Art.

“It’s arrived safely and I LOVE it! It’s lovely to hold and is a perfect Japanese “chawan” shape. It looks so at home on my little lunch tray! Thank you so much!
